Discover Holidays offers dog-sledding excursions in Alaska, even though the company knows that dogs in this cruel industry who are deemed too old or not fast enough have been shot, bludgeoned to death, or abandoned to starve—a practice exposed in the groundbreaking documentary Sled Dogs. Eyewitnesses have even reported that kennels have used homemade gas chambers, hired people to shoot “surplus” dogs, and forced untrained staff to kill the dogs themselves when money was too tight.

When they’re not being forced to pull heavy sleds for tourists or race until their bodies break down, these dogs are kept chained outside to dilapidated boxes or plastic barrels in all weather extremes, as PETA’s investigation into former Iditarod champions’ kennels shows. These dogs aren’t any different from the ones who share our homes. Treating animals as if they were disposable equipment for tourist attractions is a form of speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.

A growing list of companies—including Costco, Maxwell House, Nestlé, Pizza Hut, Rite Aid, Safeway, State Farm, and Wells Fargo—have already severed ties with this industry, and Merit Travel Group, which operates CruiseExperts Travel and AlaskaCruiseExperts.com, dropped all dog-sledding excursions from its offerings. Please join PETA in urging Discover Holidays to catch up to its competitors by ending its dog-sledding tours immediately.
