You aren’t gonna believe this, but Ace Hardware stores around the country are selling mini tanks with African dwarf frogs trapped inside. 😨 🐸 These tiny cubes are way too small for these fragile animals. We need to hammer home this message to Ace Hardware: Stop selling live frogs like merchandise!

African dwarf frogs need specialized care—but many consumers are misled to believe that they’re “low-maintenance,” which has caused many frogs to die. They live 15 years on average in nature, but they’re lucky to make it to five in captivity. 😞

Selling frogs in these tiny transparent boxes is inhumane. Period. The artificial “biospheres” aren’t proper substitutes for frogs’ natural environment at all—they don’t give them enough space to live comfortably. These tanks don’t have a filtration system to prevent water from becoming filthy and toxic. 🤮 Plus, frogs can easily pass salmonella to children or immunocompromised people, so selling them to anyone with a credit card is dangerous af. 🤦

I was aghast to learn that Ace Hardware is putting frogs at risk by selling them in its retail locations. These fragile amphibians aren’t axes or hammers—they don’t belong in your stores. Misleadingly marketed as “low-maintenance,” they have specialized needs that are often neglected—and many suffer and die as a result.

The tiny, clear boxes the frogs are sold in leave them feeling constantly exposed to perceived predators and deny them adequate room to engage in natural behaviors. By selling frogs in these containers as if they were household goods, you’re sending a message to your patrons that you have no regard for the needs of animals, which flies in the face of public sentiment.

Albertsons, Rite Aid, and Walgreens have pulled similar miniature aquariums for frogs and fish from their shelves following a windfall of complaints from concerned consumers. I ask that you please follow suit and pledge never to sell frogs in your stores again. Thank you.
