A bipartisan bill in Congress, the Opposing the Cultivation and Trade of Octopus Produced through Unethical Strategies (OCTOPUS) Act, Senate Bill 1947, has been reintroduced. It would ban commercial octopus farming in the U.S. and the import of live or dead farmed octopuses from foreign countries.

Octopuses can feel joy, excitement, pain, and fear. These smart, sensitive animals have been known to use seashells for protection, steal food from traps set by fishers, decorate their ocean homes, and even escape aquarium tanks. Keeping them on farms would lead to unnatural aggression, cannibalism, injury, and death as they fight and struggle to escape.

At the end of their miserable lives, the octopuses would be painfully slaughtered, their brains cut into, or their heads clubbed in. 😢 We can stop this, but only if we get Congress on board.

Octopuses are intelligent, sensitive individuals who have been known to use seashells as protection, steal food from traps set by fishers, decorate their homes, and even escape from aquarium tanks. Scientists have concluded that it’s impossible to farm octopuses in a way that wouldn’t compromise their welfare. At the end of their miserable lives, the animals would be slaughtered, experiencing horrific terror and pain as their brains are cut into or their heads are clubbed in.
