Bulls are social, smart animals who form strong bonds with each other. But in the sugarcane industry, these gentle animals are treated like machines and forced to work from dawn until after dark. They’re beaten with sticks and whips, pierced with barbed wire spikes, and restrained with thick nose ropes that cause painful tears and infections. 😡 Some don’t make it out alive.

Bulls aren’t the only ones who suffer in this industry. According to the New York Times, workers have straight-up had hysterectomies so they don’t miss days of work—and this is just the tip of the iceberg. 😨

I was deeply disappointed to learn that Pepsi partners use sugar in India for Pepsi branded beverages from regions that force bulls to haul tons of sugarcane loads.

Bulls are intelligent, highly social animals. But in India’s sugarcane industry, they are treated like machines: forced to work from dawn until after dark, and often pushed beyond their physical abilities and legal limits. They are beaten with sticks and whips, pierced with barbed wire spikes attached to their yokes, and restrained with nose ropes that tear and infect the nasal septa, causing agonizing pain. Many collapse from exhaustion—some are worked to death and left where they fall.

Humans in the industry face similar horrors. As the New York Times reported, workers who are reliant on bullock carts remain in poverty and face forced crushing debt, forced hysterectomies so that women do not miss days of work, and unsafe, inhumane living conditions.

There is a clear solution: eco-tractors. Unlike overloaded bullock carts that carry only a few tons, tractors can transport up to 18 tons at a time, benefiting both animals and workers.

Please commit to sourcing only bull-free sugar. Until you do, I will take my business elsewhere and encourage others to do the same.
