Update (June 6, 2026): A 16-year-old horse named Deniz has dropped dead while being forced to pull a carriage in New York City’s Central Park. Eyewitnesses report that traumatized onlookers were crying and hugging as they watched him struggle in agony for ten minutes on the pavement without medical attention before he died.
Update (September 18, 2025): New York City Mayor Eric Adams has joined the call for a ban on horse-drawn carriages, and signed an executive order stepping up enforcement of existing regulations- which are regularly flouted by carriage drivers. This comes on the heels of the Central Park Conservancy calling horse-drawn carriages a threat to public safety and coming out in support of a ban.
Update (August 5, 2025): Just days before the anniversary of Ryder collapsing, another horse has died. Lady collapsed and died while pulling a carriage in Midtown Manhattan.
Original post:
On August 10, 2022, a skinny horse named Ryder, who was used for carriage rides, collapsed in the middle of a packed New York City street. He lay on Ninth Avenue for over an hour—while his driver slapped him, whipped him, and screamed at him to get up—before dying. Ryder is one of many killed by the horse-drawn carriage industry.

Horse-drawn carriage operators ignore every rule put in place to protect the horses and the public. 😡 And here’s the thing: Ryder’s death wasn’t a rarity. Just days before the 2025 anniversary of Ryder collapsing, another horse named Lady collapsed and died while pulling a carriage in Midtown Manhattan. Horses are gonna keep dropping unless we put an end to the madness.
Please urge New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin to fast-track Ryder’s Law, which would ban horse carriages in New York City. 🚫
