On fur factory farms, minks spend their entire lives in small wire cages where they can’t run or swim, which drives many to chew off their body parts out of stress. 😰 After a life of suffering, they’re gassed to death, or their necks are broken before the skin is peeled off their bodies.

Besides being miserable, mink farms also pose a huge public health risk. They were proven hotspots for COVID-19 outbreaks, where the virus spread quickly and jumped back to humans.

These farms are hellholes for minks and could lead to the next global pandemic—which is where this bill comes in. It would end mink fur farming in the United States. 🔥🔥🔥 If you care about animals and public health, this bill is a MUST.

I am writing as a constituent to respectfully urge you to support the MINKS are Superspreaders Act, a bipartisan bill which would make it illegal to breed, possess, sell, or transport mink, and authorize a voluntary federal buy out program to help the remaining farms transition away from the industry.

In addition to the inherent cruelty in killing minks for their fur, these factory farms pose serious public health risks. Mink farms have been linked to dangerous disease outbreaks, including COVID-19, and experts are sounding the alarm that these facilities remain a serious biological threat for the creation of the next global pandemic. Eliminating this risk is a practical, preventive step that protects the broader public.

Other countries have already responded to this threat by banning mink fur farming, and two dozen have banned fur farming altogether. It is time for the United States to take the same responsible approach.

The U.S. mink fur industry has collapsed by nearly 80% in the last decade, and its contribution to our economy is negligible—less than one-ten-thousandth of one percent of the U.S. economy. A federal buy out program would provide a fair and orderly transition for the few remaining farms in a struggling industry while eliminating an unnecessary biological threat.
