Every March, hundreds of dogs are pushed past their breaking point, and sometimes even to their death, so that humans can win cash prizes.

During the 1,000-mile Iditarod race, mushers force dogs to pull heavy sleds through dangerous Alaskan terrain. Over 150 dogs have died in the race, and many more have died during the off-season while left chained up outside or have been killed because they weren’t “fast or fit enough”. 😡

The dogs who are exploited for the Iditarod can feel pain and sorrow and want to be loved, just like the dogs who sleep on our couches and play fetch with us. Why are they being treated like sporting equipment?

Please urge Delta Leasing and the Matanuska Valley Federal Credit Union—two Iditarod sponsors—to rethink their future support of this deadly race! 🐶 💗

I was disappointed to learn that your company has decided to sponsor the deadly Iditarod despite mounting controversies, a sharp decline in popularity, and an exodus of sponsors.

Every year, hundreds of dogs are pulled off the Iditarod trail because they’re ill, injured, or too exhausted to go on. Dogs may suffer from bleeding stomach ulcers or incur stress fractures, and more than 150 have died in the race, most commonly from aspiration pneumonia, caused by inhaling their own vomit. When they’re not being forced to race, they’re kept chained to dilapidated boxes or plastic barrels, left outside in subfreezing temperatures, and denied any companionship or even the opportunity to socialize with another dog.

Most of the Iditarod’s major sponsors—including ExxonMobil, Coca-Cola, Wells Fargo, and Alaska Airlines—have cut ties with it. No company should want its name tied to the race’s growing controversy and cruelty. Please rethink sponsoring this deadly event in the future.
