Over 150 dogs have died in the Iditarod. WHY does this race still have sponsors?

Up to half the dogs who are forced to run Alaska’s 1,000-mile Iditarod race don’t even make it to the finish line due to exhaustion, illness, or injury. A pregnant dog died in the race in 2025, and three young dogs met the same fate in 2024. 💔 How could anyone support this? Ask Blood Bank of Alaska—it’s chosen to sponsor the Iditarod.

The dogs who are bred, chained outside in freezing temps, and pushed to collapse for the Iditarod are no different from the ones we love and share our homes with. As long as this cruel race goes on, thousands of them will be forced to suffer, and many will be left permanently scarred (if they don’t drop dead on the trail).

Nearly all the major companies that had supported the Iditarod have stopped. Please urge Blood Bank of Alaska to reconsider its future ties! 🙏

I was disappointed to learn that Blood Bank of Alaska is sponsoring the deadly Iditarod at a time when most major sponsors have cut ties with it and public opposition to it is at an all-time high.

More than 150 dogs have died during the grueling 1,000-mile race, not including those who died during the off-season while left chained up outside in all weather extremes or those who were shot or bludgeoned to death because they didn’t make the grade. During the race, dogs may suffer from bleeding stomach ulcers or stress fractures—and some have even died from being forced to run so fast and so hard that they inhaled their own vomit.

Forcing dogs to pull a sled until they collapse from exhaustion or die doesn’t prove athleticism. Nearly all the Iditarod’s past major sponsors—including ExxonMobil, Coca-Cola, Wells Fargo, and Alaska Airlines—have cut ties with it.

No company should want to be associated with such cruelty. Please reconsider your sponsorship of the Iditarod in the future.
